Milford Earth Day
“No Trash Left Outside”
Program History:
Access to clean, safe and healthy natural spaces is a right of every citizen of Milford. However, public works labor constraints and a rapidly urbanizing environment have caused a disconnect between nature and the public. The result is a sitation where open spaces are neglected and abused, city government is unable to maintain them and the public is not engagedin a sustainable way to steward them.
The Milford Earth Day program is designed to offer an at least yearly self-funding mechanism to educate, facilitate and connect networks of well-meaning citizens with the means to steward open spaces in their neghborhoods & celebrate their success. Since 2006 The Milford Earth Day Committee has grown the one day Milford Earth Day event to include participation by nearly 1 dozen civic organizations with over 500 individuals in the care & improvement of eight neighborhood parks & open spaces. The event also now includes many educational vendors, raffles, free food for workers & many campground style team building games.
Goal:
To educate and engage the public in an entertaining way in order to promote the stewardship of Milford’s open spaces.
Objective:
To develop and host a self – funding public action, education and entertainment event for all ages that results in expanding the sustainable local stewardhship of Milford’s open spaces.
